Project Narrative
Introduction:
For my capstone project, I want to study the history of the horror film genre and how horror movies serve as a reflection of the fears of different cultures and different time periods. My central question is: To what extent is the history of the horror film genre a reflection of our fears as a society? To research this, I want to analyze prominent horror films throughout history. One aspect of the success of these films is how they are a portrait of a fear that many of us share. I will look at movies that are not only successful today, but ones that have made a significant mark on the horror genre in other cultures and time periods.
Subject matter experts:
- Mr. Mathis → history
- Mr. Mathis teaches history and also incorporates art history into his classes, which film sometimes falls under. He also taught German and knows about german culture. I want to discuss German film, specifically The Cabinet of Caligari which is heavily influential in the German expressionist style of horror. It also reflects society at the time, and some consider it to have predicted Nazism in Germany.
